BORDER CROSSING INFORMATION-INTERNATIONAL MINOR TRANSPORTATION AND CHAPERONING

When crossing the US/CAN border, identification is required.

Minors (17 and under) need

To enter Canada:

  • US Passport (Consult Border Guard for more information)
  • Letter of Permission (If travelling with a chaperone -OR- only one of your parents)

To return to the U.S.:

  • US Passport (Consult Border Guard for more information
  • Letter of Permission (If travelling with a chaperone -OR- only one of your parents)

Adults (18+) need

To enter Canada/Return to U.S.:

  • US Passport

If you plan on crossing the border without a passport, make sure to consult the appropriate officials!

  • When a minor travels across the US/CAN border with adults other than their own parents/legal guardians, or with just one parent, specific paperwork is required. A letter specifying that a minor will be under the supervision of the parent driving the vehicle across the border is needed. Or...if your child is traveling with just one parent, a letter of permission from the other parent is required. THIS letter MUST be NOTARIZED! Also refer to the purpose of the trip, the border crossing dates, etc. Sign and date the letter. Make sure this is handy at the border crossing.
