BACK IN BLACK! SSRA FAST AS EEYSL SEASON KICKS OFF AT 49

January 24-25 (Chewelah) SSRA athletes travelled to 49 Degrees North for the first EEYSL races of the season. After being postponed two weeks from the original dates, the team was excited to compete. CATCHING UP WITH THE ALPINE TEAM; FARLEY AND MCCLELLAN LEAD SSRA
During this challenging season, races have been hard to find. However, the SSRA Alpine Team (U16+) has been lucky to find snow and racing conditions at Mt. Bachelor and Mt. Spokane.

Jan 3-4 (Mt. Bachelor, OR) Jared Farley and Cole McClellan led the SSRA U16's at two Northwest Cup races at Mt. Bachelor, Oregon. The Northwest Cup Series is the premier divisional level of racing in the Pacific Northwest Ski Assocaition (Washington, Oregon and North Idaho) for athletes 14 and up.
On Saturday, Jared Farley took the top team honor with a 39th place finish overall (12th for U16's), followed by Hunter Scheidt in 42nd place (15th for U16's), and Scot Simpson in 67th (37th for U16's). In Sunday's slalom, Cole McClellan notched 31st place (8th for U16's), flanked by Jared Farley in 56th (22nd U16) and Scot Simpson in 76th (40th U16).

Jan 17-19 (Mt. Spokane, WA) Cole McClellan and the SSRA men took on visitors from around the Pacific Northwest in the first U16 qualifiers for the Western Region U16 Championships to take place at Mt. Bachelor March 18-22. In challenging conditions, racers battled it out on one of the best race venues in the Western Region-Mt. Spokane's Hourglass trail.
All four of the talented and hard working SSRA U16's took advantage of their home field advantage in the giant slalom with top twenty finishes. Cole McClellan powered to a 4th place finish after a blazing second run only 3 tenths of a second behind the leader. McClellan stopped the clock at 1.54:58. Scot Simpson took 8th place with two solid runs in a breakthrough GS performance in 2.00:30. Jared Farley was a blink of an eye behind Simpson with a 2.00:33 taking 9th place. After making the 12th fastest first run, Hunter Scheidt finished 17th for the SSRA men in 2.04:17.

PNSA U16 QUALIFIER-JAN 17-19
SSRA and Mt. Spokane will host the Pacific Northwest Ski Association U16 Qualifier #1 races that begin the selection process for the Western Region U16 Championships taking place in March at Mt. Bachelor, Oregon. The races will take place Satuday-Monday, January 17-19 with a training day on Friday, January 16.
